Realities from the Field with a Gender Specialist

During my travels in the interior, I came across many such women, many I felt were at the bottom of the food chain. Despite numerous efforts for their upliftment, the government hasn’t made much of a dent. Perhaps no one can tell us better than a Gender Specialist who has worked in the field with such women for more than 15 years, and who features in my documentary short, “Realities from the Field with a Gender Specialist.” Her insights are interesting and opens your eyes to the possibility of breaking the chronic cycle of poverty for these women.

Constant media drama has taken away focus from issues affecting the majority, especially in the rural areas where poverty is rampant. Two-thirds of Pakistan’s population is rural, and the majority earn their living through agriculture. According to Pakistan’s Planning Commission, in 2008, the number of people living below the poverty line stood at 64 million.

Now imagine the situation of rural women who’s position has never been an enviable one. They are now worse off due to a plethora of problems including malnutrition, inflation, oppressive and restrictive circumstances and more recently, disasters. 80% of rural women are involved in farming and livestock. While there have been several studies acknowledging their labour-intensive role and dual responsibilities at home and as a field hand, it still doesn’t provide the full picture and the greater part of their indispensable contribution goes unreported.

In May 2013 this documentary short was include to the RSA’s (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce)’s website  on their Pakistan Calling platform.
